MOMENTS IN THE WOODS

A little boy
threw a basketball
inside of a milk crate
and, for a moment,
he was Michael Jordan,
and though there can only be
one Michael Jordan,
it didn't take much --
just a little imagination
and a good free throw --
for him to envision
his world beyond 157th Street,
a world where it is always hot
with neighbors screaming
and the car down the way
blasting music too loud,
a world that had a place both for him
and what he knew he could do.
